MCF8316AEVM: Analog speed potentiometer is not controlling speed properly

I have finally been able to get a motor spinning (D2826 from amazon, just to play with and learn before connecting a more expensive motor).

The motor doesn't spin with the potentiometer fully clockwise. When I begin to turn the potentiometer counter clockwise, the motor begins to spin and speed up slowly however no matter where I turn the potentiometer, it conetinues to speed up with continuous acceleration and I cannot slow it down. I must just flip the brake switch or DRVOFF switch and then power cycle the board.
