DRV8305 low VGS_TH concern

Will the DRV8305 interlocking have a problem with a very low VGS turn on threshold?  The MOSFET I am using turns on at 0.8V.  Other manufacturer's gate drivers sense this as a failure and shut off.

DRV8305 Input as a High Side Monitor for low voltage inverter?

I want to confirm that the current sense circuit can work on high side monitoring if the inverter voltage is lower than 5V.  So max voltage across the current sense amp inputs is 5V but typically 4V.

DRV8837 or DRV8838 Coast mode

Hello.

I'm planning to use the DRV8837 or DRV8838.

For this application I need to operate the motor and leave it "open" at the end of the travel.

This would be similar to leave open the motor circuit wires, to keep the shaft as free as possible.

The equivalent mode will be "coast", so I would put nSLEEP to 0 at that time... BUT would the DRV8837 or DRV8838 remain protected at this moment ?

When I apply manual force to the shaft and generate voltage between the motor wires, can I damage the DRV8837 or DRV8838 because the BEMF?

Thank you for your comments.

Occurring malfunction case in use of DRV8880

  Dear Motor Driver support team,

I operate two-phase stepping motor by the driver of DRV8880 with the supply voltage of 24V and 2A full scale current at full step mode.

I changed DIR signal at every 2400 pulse of STEP signal as shown in Fig1.

When the DIR signal is Hi (CCW), I always confirmed normal rotation of the stepping motor motion and observing control signals shown in Fig.2.

Meanwhile, I often confirmed irregular stepping motor motion(the motor can not rotate but looks like trembling) at DIR signal is Low (CW) with observing the abnormal AOUT1/2 signals shown in Fig.3.

Please inform me what is the problem on my operation of the driver and how to solve it.

Sincerely yours,

Yohjiro Kawai,

Hi Team,

My customer is using DRV8842 and met an issue.

Customer found that when the power supply is turned off, there're chances that out1, out2, VM are shorted together and there's chances that they aren't.

The schematic is attached. It'll be appreciated if you can help me explain it. Thanks.

DRV8308EVM no communication between Gui and MSP430.

Good day,

I wanted to do some testing with the DRV8308EVM, but the GUI will not load without installing Gui composer.

And when GUI composer is installed it the GUI see's the USB to Uart chip from FTDI but it will not show the used processor.

After this point its clear that there is no communication between DRV8308EVM and the GUI.

We made a interface the board with a MSP-FET programmer to program the MSP. We programmed with the firmware delivered with the GUIv1.2 file but no luck.

Did we miss a library for Uart communication?? Also tried to make it work with Linux but faild to launch GUI composer after install...

DRV8412 PWM output issue

Hello,

I want to use the DRV8412 with a brushless DC fan (in fact, I want to use 3 half bridges for 3 fans - input D is not used). The DRV is powered with 24V (PVDD), PWM frequency is set to 218kHz.

I noticed an issue / strange behaviour with the output when setting the duty cycle from anything above 11% to 0%, please see picutres below for further details. Fan is not connected to the output, but I use a LC ladder with 15uH and 2x10uF for filtering which is the only load at the moment.

C2: pwm input (pin 7 on DRV)
C4: output (pin 36 on DRV)

1) PWM set to 50% - output looks fine:

2) Setting PWM from 50% to 0% - output is high (about 10.7V), although there's no PWM input signal:

Now, let's try to set the PWM duty cycle down to 0% in two steps:

1) Setting the PWM cycle from 50% to 1%, output looks fine:

2) When setting PWM from 1% to 0%, now the output is low as expected:

This odd behavior can be reconstructed for any PWM duty cycle above 11%, so setting the PWM duty cycle from e.g. 10% to 0% is not a problem.

Is there a minimum on time for the PWM? Any advice or suggestions for this issue?

Thanks in advance,

Eike

DRV8312EVM 2 chips hot

Hi there,

I got a DRV8312EVM base board with a F2806x ISO controlCARD. When I give power supply to both boards for a while, the U3(DCH010505S-isolated DC/DC converter)  and  U4(ISO1050DUB-isolated CAN transceiver) on DRV8312EVM turn hot (must above 45 Celsius), and then the MCU on F2806x ISO controlCARD will become a little hot later.

Is that normal? I searched the U3(DCH010505S) datasheet, it seems the temperature when the chip working is around 85 Celsius.

But why U4 and F28068 MCU are also hot?  Is there anyone can give me any clue? Thanks in advance.

DRV8801 Overcurrent Limit

$

The DRV8801 datasheet describes an overcurrent  trip feature - if the voltage on the current sense resistor goes above 0.5V, the drivers are disabled.

Can anyone tell me some details of its operation?

  • Is this the same as the Overcurrent protection or in addition to it?
  • Does the nFault output go low when triggered?
  • Does the output turn on again after a delay period?

Thanks!

drv8834EVM test question

I tested the EVM with internal microstepper control to drive a step motor.

when I choose slow decay, the waveform is shown below(green is the current, and red is Vout1-Vout2)

when I choose fast decay, the waveform is shown below(green is the current, red refers to Vout1-Vout2)

DRV8834 is using fixed-frequency PWM scheme to control the current.

I wonder why there is no PWM of Vout1-Vout2(voltage on the inductance of the motor) when the current is zero.

And why Vout1-Vout2(voltage on the inductance of the motor) rises and drops like a arc in slow decay mode when the current is zero?

Iam working with DRV8302.There is a problem that whenever i pull the ENABLE pin high the FAULT pin goes low.I don't know why it is happening.I have disabled the overcurrent protection. So i don't think so if there is any source of fault....Please help.

DRV8711 stall not detected

I've got a BOOST-DRV8711 dev board (http://www.ti.com/tool/boost-drv8711) to have some fun with the DRV8711 IC.

I'm interested in stall detection, to detect when the motor looses steps. Using a general purpose MCU I wired the SPI and the STEP/DIR pins. I'm able to read/write the internal registers and to move the motor.

I read a lot of other threads and the relevant docs. I'm aware I have to find the correct values by experiments, they depend upon motors, voltage, speed, I cannot use full-step, etc....

To try this feature I set these parameters:

  • torque = 128, smplth = 200 us
  • microstepping = 1/16
  • sdthr = 0xFF, sdcnt = 1 step, vdiv = / 32
  • motor voltage: 12 V

All other settings are left on their default value. This is the motor I'm using (with no load):

http://www.applied-motion.com/sites/default/files/HT17-268_RevC.pdf

I set the motor to run @ 5000 step/s and I clamped the axis, but nothing happened (I was expecting the stall led turns on). Because the stall condition is met when the BEMF drops below the sdthr value I reduced both torque and speed settings - with no luck.

I'm using the most sensitive settings to detect a stall condition (maximum value for sdthr and lowest value for vdiv).
Anyway I tried to set different values to that register with no luck.

Perhaps I miserunderstood the datasheet?

DRV8308 sequence start running

$

Hi everyone,

Im  working with the driver DRV8308 but so far i didnt achieved to make it works.

I have doubts about the sequence or steps i must follow to do so.

First of all, let me show you my registers table

AddressValue
0x000x6941
0x010x0000
0x020x04B4
0x030x5F82
0x040x0350
0x050x300C
0x060x0258
0x070x0140
0x080x012C
0x090x02BC
0x0A0xF140
0x0B0x09C4

Well, so far im able to write these registers and to read them so i can check they are correctly written.

Once this is done it is suppossed that the ENABLE pin is active already, because the ENPOL bit is = 1 (ENABLE active with low level) and the GPIO is low.

But i cant see the motor working.

My ask is ¿what is the correct sequence so the motor starts moving?

Thanks and best reagrds

DRV8308EVM gui

I just got a DRV8308 EVM. installed the gui composer and app, starts ok but will not see the com port the EVM is on. It is com20, it insists on connecting to com10 and com20 will not show up in drop down list.

This sits in an endless loop flagging errors and will not shut up.. Who wrote this crap? Why am I wasting my time with the simple stuff..

What's the problem..don't tell me windows, it is fine and so is the port.

DRV8308 Change the speed issues

$

Hi team,

The customer is using DRV8308 EVM.  In the "PWM Modes" , he can change the speed of motor anytime. In the "Clock Frequency Mode" , he can change the  speed of motor when the frequency  increases from 100HZ to 2KHZ.

But there is no change for  the  speed of motor when  the frequency  decreases from 100HZ,even if he change the clock value.

In the "Clock Frequency Mode" , the speed register is set 4094.

What is the reason?  How to solve the issue?

Thanks,

DRV8825 microstepping large errors

$

I have been doing some testing on a DRV8825 Pololu module from China. I have found that the unit gets very hot and has very poor microstepping as compared to the A4988, I was wondering if this was expected or if it might be a knock off chip in these modules?

Specifically on the microstepping I have connected an encoder to the motor and monitored the motor angle and found that the 16x microstepping causes motor to jump forward or lag behind 2-4 microsteps.  I have tried increasing current and when I do the motor starts humming and getting really hot, but the performance does not improve.

When I replace the module with an A4988 module the error is less than 1 microstep with lower current and no noise.   I had expected that the TI chip would far exceed the A4988 chip and hence wanted to see if this is expected behavior of the DRV8825?
