If the working voltage range of a stepper motor is 9~12V, but the power supply voltage of DRV8889-Q1 is VM=40V, will it damage the stepper motor?

DRV8889 will set an IFS current, the IFS current needs to be <= the maximum working current of the stepper motor; and the current flowing through the stepper motor coil is proportional to the voltage across the coil.Because the IFS value < the maximum working current of the coil, so the voltage across the coil will not exceed its maximum working voltage. So even if the VM value is >40V, it will not damage the stepper motor, is my understanding correct?
